Glossary of Terms

Glazing:

A tinted transparent liquid is applied over a base color to create a modulated, watercolor-like effect. Different looks can be achieved by varying the method of application.
Strie: fine, subtle striping created by pulling a wipe stiff bristle brush through the glaze, a very elegant finish. Ragging: The glaze color is applied to the wall and “ragged off” with a crumpled rag. The result is a crisp, broken texture. By using cheesecloth instead of a rag, a softer, more even, glazed effect is achieved.

Faux Finishes:

From the French word meaning “fake” or “false." Marbleizing is a faux finish that creates the illusion of real marble. Faux bois creates the illusion of wood.

Venetian Plaster:

A mixture of limestone and marble dust is trowled onto the wall in layers. The final effect looks and feels like stone and has a smooth, marble-like finish. Available in a wide range of colors or can be custom mixed.

Metal Leaf:

Gilding is the application of metal in any form (leaf, foil, paint, powder, etc.)

Canvas Wall Coverings:

The mural or decorative design is painted on canvas, and then either applied to the wall like wallpaper or hung on a rod like a tapestry. Canvas can also be stretched on a frame and made into a standing screen or hanging panel.
