How to order your wallpaper

Once you have chosen a wallpaper design you will need to decide on the repeat size, for a pattern, or the design height, for a mural. If you want custom sizing or moving elements with in the mural, we will need to know. We strongly advise that you order a sample prior to ordering your wallpaper. The cost of the first sample will come off the final order total.

Choose a substrate. We offer our murals and patterns on Mural Pro Wallpaper, Non-woven Fabric, Canvas, Metallic Canvas and Etching Paper. Different substrates are appropriate for different images and suitable for different applications. Call us if you want advice on your choice and new substrates are becoming available all the time, like aluminum, glass, wood and self adhesive. Call if you would like pricing on these specialty substrates..

Next you will want pricing. In order to determine the amount of wallpaper and provide pricing for your project, we will need measurements of your room. You may contact us by phone, email or snail mail with your enquiry. Registration on the contact page is required prior to pricing.

Measuring for your wallpaper

If you want a wallpaper pattern or have a room with few doors & windows you can simply send us the length, width and height of your room & we can tell you how much wallpaper you will need. In the case of a mural we will produce enough to cover all walls, windows and doors & your installer will cut out the doors and windows, saving him time. This method allows for immediate delivery of stock.

If you want custom work done, we can adapt your design with a mixture of standard and custom sized panels to fit the room – working over and around doors and windows, even stairs. In order to provide custom design we require accurate elevations and floor plans, at which point we can calculate the total number and placement of panels necessary for your project. The additional charge associated with custom work will add to the “per square foot” cost and add to the turn around time, however, there is less waste and an opportunity to place elements to the best advantage for the room & it’s design.

If you do not have professional elevations, measuring for wallpaper is not as complicated as one might imagine. Simply put, you must chop the room up into boxes. Box measurements along with a hand drawn “map”, as shown below, and photos of each wall will be fine for estimating and ordering. Be sure to measure in several spots and use the largest measurements to allow for “out of plumb” walls. We will add 4 inches overlap to all doors and windows for an additional “safety net”.

Measuring

Is additional protection needed? We can glaze or clear coat your paper, when applicable, prior to shipping. These coatings, available in Gloss, Satin or Matt finish, offer uv protection as well as some water protection. Please let us know if you want added protection. In bathroom applications, we suggest a coating after the paper is installed to seal the seams as well as the paper. Call us for appropriate coatings.

After providing us with the above information we will give you a quote. As soon as we have a 50% deposit and a signed proposal we will put your wallpaper into production. Custom order clients will receive a scale set of elevations of their room with a design layout and a sample for approval prior to printing. We can generally ship your finished paper within two weeks of receiving an elevation sign off, sample approval and full payment. Next day service is available for production and / or shipping.

Hanging Instructions

Delivery
Inspect wall covering for defects before hanging. No returns will be honored after they have been cut or pasted. Zoë Design giclée wallpapers are worthy of care and attention by an experienced paperhanger.

Preparation
All walls must be at a “Level 5 finish”, clean, dry, and free of dust, oil or contaminants of any kind that will affect adhesion. New plaster walls should be completely dry. The moisture content should be below 10%, with an ideal Ph lever or less than 10. Surface temperatures should be between 60-80º for three days prior and three days after installation. Full plaster requires a minimum of 30 days, skim coat plaster a minimum of 10 days to cure. Throughly prime with a Primer/Sealer such as Zinsser Gardz (clear) or Zinsser Shieldz (pigmented).

Surfaces previously painted with gloss or eggshell paint should be washed with Dirtex, rinsed, dried and sanded, to create a tooth, prior to priming.

Walls should be lined with a quality lining paper, using clear paste and allowed to fully dry prior to hanging. Please see Bill Archibalds “Why Lining Paper”.

Hanging
For our Mural Pro substrate, use a clear strippable adhesive such as Roman 838 or 977. Ensure that it is spread generously and evenly over the wall and into the edges. When it is dry, pre-trim and paste your panels, booking them for 3-5 minutes, taking care not to get paste on the front and not to crease the paper. Hang the paper with a high quality smoothing brush then a soft smoothing blade. Double cut the paper with a backing strip in place. Always avoid getting adhesive on to the face or the paper. If it gets on the surface, immediately remove with a clean damp cloth.

For wallpapers with dark colors we recommend using a colored pencil or crayon on the edge and seam to avoid white edges showing.

Care & Maintenance

Zoë Design giclée wallpapers will give many decades of service when correctly cared for. In order to do so they must be installed properly and protected from sources of damp, excessive humidity and extremes of temperature. Keep them away from direct sunlight because it will fade them over time. Be careful when cleaning woodwork near wallpapers and do not allow bleaches or other cleaning products to touch the wallpaper. You may dust or wipe gently with a clean damp cloth, test cleaning practices in an obscure area.
